What Is a Unix Timestamp?

A Unix timestamp (or epoch time) is the number of seconds that have passed since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970. It is a simple, time-zone-free way for computers to store and compare moments in time.

Many systems use seconds, while JavaScript and some APIs use milliseconds. This converter detects which one you have and shows the date in UTC and in your own time zone.

Quick answers about using the MoSanKit Unix Timestamp Converter.

Epoch time is the starting point for Unix timestamps: 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970.

Current timestamps in seconds have 10 digits (about 1.7 billion), while milliseconds have 13. The tool auto-detects this, or you can choose the unit.

Yes. Negative values are dates before 1970.

Local time uses your device time zone and daylight saving rules. UTC is the same everywhere.

Systems that store seconds in a signed 32-bit number run out in January 2038. Modern 64-bit systems are not affected.

No. All conversion happens in your browser.
